Appropriate Use of AI in CTE
How to Explicitly Teach Appropriate AI Use
Using the Stoplight Model for AI in CTE As you plan lessons, projects, and assessments, decide when AI supports learning and when it may interfere with authentic skill development. Green Light (AI Encouraged) AI may be used to support learning, practice, and improvement. Examples: Exploring careers and industry trends Brainstorming project ideas Practicing interviews or workplace scenarios Receiving feedback on resumes, reports, or presentations Reviewing technical concepts Yellow Light (AI with Caution) AI may be used with clear boundaries and teacher guidance. Examples: Researching industry information (must be verified) Creating project plans or outlines Troubleshooting problems (student explains the solution) Drafting professional communications for revision Red Light (AI Not Allowed) AI use would replace the student's demonstration of learning or technical skill. Examples: Completing performance assessments Producing final project work without student input Completing certification-related assessments Submitting AI-generated work as evidence of competency Key Principle : AI should enhance learning and career readiness, not replace student thinking, skill development, or authentic demonstration of competency.
AI Expectations for Today’s Tasks
Career Research & Project Planning
Use AI to explore careers, generate project ideas, and research industry trends. AI may help improve reports, resumes, or presentations, but students must create the original content and verify accuracy. No AI use. Students must independently demonstrate technical skills, complete performance assessments, and provide evidence of competency.
