Content Standards: Standard 4.OA.5 Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. For example, given the rule "add 3" and the starting number 1, generate terms in the resulting sequence and observe that the terms appear to alternate between odd and even numbers. Explain informally why the numbers will continue to alternate in this way.
End of Unit Competency
By the end of Topic 14 students will be able to justify how to use a rule to continue a pattern, a table to extend a pattern, and use a repeating pattern to predict a shape. Language Functions and Features: Describe data and/or steps to solve problems using: ● Mathematical terms ( rule, repeating pattern, number sequence, create, extend, generate, solve, predict ) ● Visuals to support approach and/or solution ( table ) and statements to present processes (eg. The next number in the pattern will be … because… ) Evaluate others’ arguments using: ● Conditional clauses (if/then) to justify conclusions (eg. Ralph is correct because ...) ● Technical nouns, defnitions, patterns, or rules to provide details (eg. Two features of the pattern are …)
