Connecting to Students’ Experiences : Explain the situation and think aloud as you create a bar diagram to represent the situation below:
Ask students to think about times when they might use multiplication or division to compare. Have them represent the situations with a bar diagram. Call on volunteers to share their real-world problems with the class. As students listen to peers present their situations, ask them to represent the problems they hear with bar diagrams.
Extension
Enrichment 6-6: Time for Lunch? Then, have students write their own questions with hidden questions onto index cards. Have students swap cards with several classmates, identify the hidden questions, then solve.
