Manipluatives: Use place value blocks to model multiplying multiples of 10, 100, and 1,000. The following example shows how to model 3 × 50.
“I can use place-value blocks to model 3 × 50. 50 is the same as 5 tens, so I start with a group of 5 tens. 3 × 5 tens means 3 groups of 5 tens. If I combine the 3 groups of 5 tens, I will have 15 tens. Then I can regroup 10 tens for one hundred and 5 tens, which is 150.” 3-7 STEM Activity: Topographic Maps. As an additional challenge, students can make their own topographic maps similar to the one on the worksheet and label the elevations if each layer represents 1,430 feet.
