Using Novels for 4th & 5th Grade During Skills-Based Instruction (SBI)

Novels must be chosen from the Book Blitz Junior list for the current year and with an intentional instructional focus. Teachers must read the novel prior to planning lessons for instruction. Novels on the Book Blitz Junior list have gone through the thirteen criteria process as stated in Board Policy. The Process for selection of books for the Book Blitz Junior Competition includes: •​ A combination of books that are considered to be on grade level, slightly above grade level and slightly below by standard professional review sources have been selected •​ Titles are selected based on positive reviews from standard professional review sources, potential student interest, and age-appropriateness of the content •​ The twelve titles are read in advance of being placed on the final list Use of these selected novels does not require students participation in the district competition.
