Formative Assessment (frequent checks for understanding) Formative assessment is assessment for student learning that allows teachers to check for understanding during a lesson. Formative assessments help teachers identify concepts that students are struggling to understand, skills they are having difficulty acquiring, or standards that are already met so that instructional adjustments can be made to increase student outcomes. While there are hundreds of ways teachers can formatively assess, a few of the most popular examples are: • Students show their work on whiteboards • Exit tickets that target the objective of the lesson with a question or reflection • Clicker quiz or short quiz • Physical response - thumbs up/down, 4-corners, stand up/sit down, choral response • Student self-assessment or rubric • Daily student work • Lab checklists CSIP - Canyons School Improvement Plan - Yearly goals developed by every school team each spring that outline the focus for improvement in Academics (Language Arts, STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Math] and School Climate (including Positive Behavior Interventions and Support). • Professional Learning Goal - A statement about what the instructional practices that a teacher intends to implement to increase the likelihood that students will achieve identified proficiency target(s). • Student Growth Goal - A statement that defines expectations for student achievement of the identified proficiency targets.
