Learning Intention: I am learning to determine or clarify unknown and multi-meaning words and phrases using a variety of strategies. Success Criteria: I know I’ll have it when, ● I can identify unknown words and phrases and choose a strategy to use to determine the meaning. ● I can clarify the meaning of words and phrases that have multiple meanings and choose a strategy to use to determine the meaning. ● I can analyze patterns of word changes or parts of speech that indicate different meanings. ● I can consult reference materials (digital or print dictionaries, thesaurus, glossary, etc.) to learn about words and phrases. Learning Progression Example 1. Identify unknown or multi-meaning words in a text. 2. Know of a variety of reference materials you could access to learn more about words and phrases. 3. Determine the best place to go to learn more about the word or phrase. 4. Know and understand word patterns and parts of speech. Use them to alter the meaning of words. 5. Analyze why an author might use certain word patterns or parts of speech in their writing.
