Question Stems and Prompts for Assessment ● What tools or strategies can you use to verify the meaning of an unknown word/phrase? ● What familiar word part (affx or root) is in the word? What meaning does it provide? ● What reference tool would best assist you in determining the pronunciation of a word, its meaning, or its part of speech? ● What is the origin of the word? Did it derive from another language? ● How has the meaning/use of the word changed over time? ● Does the positioning of the word in the sentence help you to determine the meaning?
