Learning Intentions and Success Criteria Examples Learning Intention: I am learning to determine or clarify unknown and multi-meaning words and phrases using a variety of strategies. Success Criteria: I know I’ll have it when, ●​ I can identify unknown words and phrases and choose a strategy to use to determine the meaning. ●​ I can clarify the meaning of words and phrases that have multiple meanings and choose a strategy to use to determine the meaning. ●​ I can analyze patterns of word changes or parts of speech that indicate different meanings. ●​ I can consult reference materials (digital or print dictionaries, thesaurus, glossary, etc.) to learn about words and phrases. Learning Progression Example 1. ​ Identify unknown or multi-meaning words in a text. 2. ​ Know of a variety of reference materials you could access to learn more about words and phrases. 3. ​ Determine the best place to go to learn more about the word or phrase. 4. ​ Know and understand word patterns and parts of speech. Use them to alter the meaning of words. 5. ​ Analyze why an author might use certain word patterns or parts of speech in their writing.
