8.1: Chemistry 3 Dimensions & Progressions

Unit 2

● I can identify patterns in data to determine if a chemical reaction took place.

● Students will perform or watch one or more of the following reactions to see that temperature changes are a sign of a chemical reaction. Possible reactions include: H 2 0 2 and yeast, Alka-seltzer and water, or HCl with Zinc (reaction releases H 2 gas, becomes a solution, and gives off heat) ● A second option is to perform this lab with the students. Students are going to make various solutions and monitor the temperature changes. They will classify them as ● Students will determine whether the following things show a reaction or not. Students focus on explaining whether it is or and not, and why. These are ideas for reactions to show no reaction: heated can crushed in water, ripping paper, cake in a mug, melt butter or something, food coloring in H 2 0 exothermic or endothermic.

● (Depends on what reaction you want to show) ● Hydrogen peroxide, yeast ● Alka-seltzer and water ● HCl acid and mossy Zinc
