5th grade Instructional Guide

5th Grade Math Scope & Sequence

End of Unit Competency

By the end of Topic 15 students will be able to explain how patterns can be analyzed and graphed, and how number patterns and graphs can be used to solve problems. Language Functions and Features: Describe data and/or steps to solve problems using: ● Mathematical terms ( corresponding, ordered pair, number sequence, rule ) ● Visuals to support approach and/or solution ( table, coordinate grid ) and statements to present processes (eg. The table can help you find the missing value by following the rule… ) Evaluate others’ arguments using… ● Conditional clauses ( when, if ) to generalize commonalities and differences (eg. If you use the rules “add 3” and “add 4”...) ● Relating verbs to make a claim ( have, belong to, be ) ● Definitions, patterns, and rules to provide details (eg. The relationship between the ordered pairs is… ) ● Declarative statements to disagree/debate ( I agree, I disagree, I did it differently )
