STRUCTURED BREAKS Structured breaks are an alternative to escape maintained behaviors. They allow a safe alternative to elopement from the classroom or other unsafe or disruptive behaviors. Structured breaks give students the framework to escape more appropriately.

Things to Consider:

Implementation Steps : ● Identify safe space ● Identify method for asking for a break ● Identify options for break

● Before moving to Tier 3 structured breaks, make sure tier 1 and tier 2 strategies are being used consistently. ● Student can still ask for breaks at any time throughout the day. ● Tier 3 required another behavior system to be in place, such as a token economy, check-in/check-out, or level system. 1. Data is collected on when student uses inappropriate behavior to escape demands or taks. 2. All steps from tier 2 are identified and taught to student. 3. Type of available breaks and criteria for each break is determined

● Identify return procedure

Fun Breaks: The student has exhibited appropriate behavior (as measured by their tracker, level system or token board) and they have earned a highly reinforcing activity. Calm Breaks: The student is showing they need a sensory break and their behavior has not been appropriate or they haven’t met the requirement for a fun break. Activities could include fidget toy, running, jumping, coloring, listening to calm music, or alone time. This break should also include some re-teaching of expectations and reminder of how to earn a fun break.

● Connect using

breaks appropriately to a reward system (token economy)

● Teach procedure to student ● Pre-teach procedure frequently

4. Breaks a scheduled throughout the day based on data collection. 5. Student is explicitly taught break expectations. 6. Data is collected to determine if more or less breaks are needed.

● Use visuals in

student space and break space for a reminder of expectations

Fidelity Check:

Tier 1 and Tier 2 fidelity checks are completed Another system is in place to determine type of break Adults are delivering frequent enough reinforcement Student has access to appropriate items during breaks Data is being collected and analyzed to determine if more breaks are needed or if they can be faded Breaks are happening at the schedule time
