UNIT OVERVIEW
The 6th-grade introductory social studies unit aims to lay a solid foundation for students' understanding of history, geography, and the diverse cultures that shape our world. Students will develop essential historical thinking skills, map reading abilities, and critical analysis of primary and secondary sources. By exploring the past and its impact on the present, students will gain a broader perspective of the world, fostering their growth as informed global citizens. LEARNING INTENTIONS ● Understand the concept of historical timelines and sequence events in chronological order, identifying significant moments in history. ● Develop map skills by reading and interpreting different types of maps, including political, physical, and thematic maps. ● Explore the importance of geography in shaping civilizations, trade, and cultural exchange throughout history. ● Analyze primary and secondary sources to distinguish between fact and opinion, and draw informed conclusions about historical events. ● Understand what constitutes culture and recognize the value of diversity in shaping the world. ● Identify the role of government and the principles of democracy in various historical and contemporary societies. ● Identify and describe the different social studies disciplines of history, geography, economics, and civics fostering an appreciation for social studies as a discipline.
