Access Newcomers Student Conferencing
Read 180 and System 44 include tools for conferencing with students during rotations, which include conversations on usage of the Student App, Independent Reading, and Progress on the Phonics Inventory and Reading Inventory. While Access Newcomers does not have include conferencing as part of its model, Multilingual Learners can still greatly benefit from regular conferencing with their teachers for a variety of purposes to support learning. Multilingual Learners possess a vast wealth of experience that educators can draw on in order to make instruction meaningful, relevant, and culturally responsive (Llopart Esteban-Guiart, 2018). Appropriate Student Conferencing topics could include the following: ● Favorite past times, hobbies, sports, and ● Country of origin cultural events, holidays, and practices ● Differences and similarities between living in the U.S. and their country of origin ● Successes and Challenges in other classes ● Assistance required for specific assignments in ELD or other classes ● School counselor availability and services ● Upcoming assemblies, programs, and school events ● School geography (lunch room, media center, bathrooms, gym, etc.) ● How to access translation services for home and family ● Using translation apps and services ● Social and Emotional Learning reinforcement of school programs
