Reading Inventory (RI) The HMH Reading Inventory is an objective, research-based assessment of students’ reading comprehension ability that can be used to screen and place students, form groups, and differentiate instruction. It is a computer-adaptive test designed for quick administration in an untimed, low-pressure environment. The RI is based on the Lexile Framework for reading which is designed to bridge two critical aspects of student reading achievement --- Leveling text difficulty and assessing the reading skills of each student. During the RI test, students read brief passages from literature and nonfiction and answer questions about what they have read. Phonics Inventory (PI) The Phonics Inventory is designed to identify older struggling readers who require systematic and explicit phonics instruction to strengthen foundational skills necessary for fluency and reading comprehension. The PI measures both accuracy and fluency by identifying the number of correct the answers as well as the speed of student responses. The assessment measures letter recognition, sight word recognition, and nonsense word decoding. System 44 Software The System 44 software includes engaging and motivating opportunities for students to learn, practice, and apply skills. Each Software Topic begins with direct instruction followed by multiple activities that lead students to develop accuracy in word reading and spelling, an concludes with transfer to connected text. Teachers use the data from the software to differentiate instruction in small groups and reinforce the skills being taught in the software. System 44 Progress Monitoring and Summative Midyear and End of Year Test System 44 has five progress monitoring tests that assess phonemic awareness, phonics, sight words, spelling and morphology. These test are given throughout the year after certain lessons are mastered in the adaptive student software. The two summative assessments help monitor how well students have maintained skills and whether they can apply and transfer those stills to new contexts. These assessments are administered midyear and at the end of the year and cover phonemic awareness, phonics, word recognition, spelling, vocabulary, and morphology. Progress Monitoring Measures There are many curriculum-embedded assessments in the System 44 program. These include writing, research projects, daily formative assessments, book quizzes, and oral fluency assessments. Teachers use these progress monitoring measures the adjust groups and differentiate instruction.
