The Summarize routine gives teachers a consistent process to teach summarizing and provides students with clear expectations for how to provide a summary and what it should include.

Reading routines require students to read attentively in their own copies of the text. Each routine engages students in focused and on-task reading, while providing observable evidence of engagement. Students gain access to challenging texts while the teacher models fluent reading. As students read each text multiple times, they take on an active role that allows them to build comprehension and gradually assume responsibility for reading independently. There are five Reading routines linked to the right.
