Read aloud the text and omit words while students follow along silently and chime in chorally with the missing words.

Oral Cloze 1

Read aloud the text, increase the pace slightly, and omit different words.

Repeat steps above, but increase the pace.

Oral Cloze 2

Assign an active reading question or task, read aloud as students follow along silently, and partner students to discuss responses. Read a poem, a short text, or a chunk of a longer text out loud together with students. Students read the text three times: once silently to choose words to omit, once aloud to their partner, and once following along and chiming in with the words their partner leaves out. Students read a text silently while actively looking for information to respond to a focused question or task.
