PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS
An established problem-solving process with decision rules assists teams in determining needs, developing hypotheses about root causes, identifying solutions, setting measurable goals, and monitoring the effectiveness of implementation. The 4-step problem-solving process typically includes these critical elements: identifying a specific problem and specifying a goal for change, determining underlying causes and potential barriers, determining a potential solution, and developing a plan for implementation and evaluation of outcomes.
Define the Problem
4-Step Problem-Solving Model
Analyze the Problem
Implement and Evaluate
Identify a Solution
Define the Problem: What specifically do we want students to know and/or be able to do? Review data to determine facts vs. heresy Determine the expectation or goal Analyze the Problem: Why is the problem occurring? Determine the underlying root causes and barriers that are the most relevant and alterable Plan for addtional data that may be needed Identify a Solution: What is the plan to achieve the goal? Ensure the solution is clearly defined with action steps and timelines that are do-able Work to gain buy-in from stakeholders
Implement and Evaluate: Is the plan working? Develop strategies to monitor both implementation and outcomes Analyze short-term and long-term results
