Attend to precision. Communicate precisely to others by crafting careful explanations that communicate mathematical reasoning by referring specifically to each important mathematical element, describing the relationships among them, and connecting their words clearly to their representations. Calculate accurately and efficiently, and use clear and concise notation to record work. Fifth grade students attend to precision when they consider the symbols and units as they calculate conversions. Listen and look for students that exhibit the following behaviors: • compute accurately and use symbols appropriately • accurately use problem-solving strategies • specify and use units of measure appropriately • decide whether an exact answer or estimate is needed • calculate efficiently, accurately, and fluently.
