CURRICULUM COMPACTING Differentiate material for advanced learners by compacting the curriculum in order to provide supplemental and enrichment activities.
Definition Curriculum compacting is a technique for differentiating instruction that allows teachers to make adjustments to curriculum for students who have already mastered the material to be learned, replacing content students know with new content, enrichment options, or other activities. Researchers recommend that teachers first determine the expected goals of the unit or lesson in terms of the content, skills, or standards students must learn before assessing students to determine which ones have already mastered most or all of the specified learning outcomes. Process Curriculum Compacting is an instructional technique that is specifically designed to make appropriate customization for advanced learners. Essentially, the procedure involves (1) defining the goals and outcomes of a particular unit or segment of instruction, (2) determining and documenting which students have already mastered most or all of a specified set of learning outcomes, (3) providing instruction for mastery
Critical Actions for Educators
1. Start at the Standards
2. Define the Goals and Objectives
3. Pre-Assess, or alternatively assess, competencies related to these objectives 4. Provide instructional options for students who have not yet attained all of the pre-assessed objectives 5. Provide deep learning experiences and student choice where the curriculum is already mastered
of learning outcomes, and (4) providing deeper learning strategies for material already mastered through the use of instructional options that enable a more challenging and productive use of the student's time (Reis & Renzulli, 2005).
The instruction necessarily entails reduced amounts of introductory activities, drill, and practice and increased enrichment, connection and application activities. (Templeton Report, 2004)
