General Instructions
Pacing This curriculum map provides guidance for teachintghe Utah Core Standards for Social Studiesand Science withthe Reading Street connections where applicable. Following the map will allow studenttos access all core standardsby the end of the year. To support students’ mastery of the standards, a scope and sequence was developedto address content areas. Attendingto these standards will allow teachers to focus instruction forthe given unit and better assess students’ understanding of each standardS.cience and Social studies instruction occurs in 3 week blocks. The maps have been organized to complete Science instruction prior to the USBE end of level test, therefore making Unit 6 for all tested grade levels an all Social Studies unit. Ideally, Science and Social Studies is taught 4 days a week, unless you have a 2 hour, 1 day per week Brainbooster. Science & Social Studies Instruction During the Science and Social Studies block, students will havtehe opportunity to learn about and experience science and social studies as directed by the Utah State Core curriculum. “Elementary school students learn scienceand social studies best when; they are involved in first- hand exploration and investigationand inquiry/process skills are nurtured, instruction builds directolyn the student’s conceptual framework, and when mathematics and communication skills araen integral part of instruction.” The Utah Core states: “By reading texts in history/social studies, science, and other disciplines, students builadfoundation of knowledge in these fields that will also give them the backgrountodbe better readers in all content areas. Students can only gain this foundation when the curriculum is intentionally and coherently structured o develop rich content knowledge withinand across grades. Students also acquirethe habits of reading independently and closely, which are essential to their future success.” Example Performance Assessment Example performance assessments have been included in the map as ideoans different types of assessmentsto determine mastery. An example has been listed for every objective forthe 4 th and 5 th grade Science and Social Studies core. Guidance Ideas for howto incorporate literacy, math, art,and other standards withthe Social Studies and Science standards have been included in this portion of the map. Linkson where to find resources and lesson plans have been provided.
