SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING Effect Size 0.62
Social emotional learning provides a framework for students to understand, manage, and be successful with social interactions and emotional regulation. It also provides the skills to problem solve and handle difficult emotions and social situations. These skills are essential to student success at school and help build college and career readiness. Social emotional learning is best taught through effective classroom instruction with high student engagement, skills reinforced inside and outside the classroom, and broad parent and community involvement. There are 5 competencies to social emotional learning curriculum, see chart below for details: ● Self-awareness ● Self-management ● Social awareness ● Relationship skills ● Responsible decision making
Critical Actions for Educators: ● Following and using the provided curriculum helps build student’s shared vocabulary and knowledge. ● Build in opportunities for
students to practice and receive reinforcement for using skills.
● Partner with parents. Provide resources for
home-based activities to help families explore and reinforce skills.
Self-awareness: The ability to accurately recognize their emotions and thoughts and their influence on behavior. This includes an understanding of one’s strengths and limitations, and possessing a sense of confidence. Self-management: The ability to regulate their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in a variety of situations. This includes controlling impulses, managing stress, motivating oneself, and setting and working toward personal and academic goals. Social awareness: The ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others from diverse backgrounds and cultures, to understand social and ethical norms for behavior, and to recognize family, school, and community resources and supports. Relationship skills: The ability to establish and maintain healthy and fulfilling relationships with diverse individuals and groups. This includes active listening, cooperating, communicating clearly, identifying and resisting inappropriate social pressure, negotiating conflict, and seeking and offering help when needed. Responsible decision making: The ability to make respectful choices about personal behavior and social interactions on ethical and social norms, safety concerns, accurate evaluation of consequences of actions, and the well-being of self and others.
