3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Use stated assumptions, definitions, and previously established results to construct arguments. Explain and justify the mathematical reasoning underlying a strategy, solution, or conjecture by using concrete referents such as objects, drawings, diagrams, and actions. Listen to or read the arguments of others, decide whether they make sense, ask useful questions to clarify or improve the arguments, and build on those arguments. First grade students critique the reasoning of others as they determine the best strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. Listen and look for students that exhibit the following behaviors: • ask questions to understand other people’s thinking • identify mistakes in other people’s thinking • provide suggestions for improving other people’s thinking Sentence Frames: • I know my answer is correct because ________________ • I agree/disagree with __________ because ___________ ©Canyons School District
