SKILL-BASED INSTRUCTION INMATH
Skills-based small groups are an essential part of the math block to provide extended support . The groups are organized using data collected during math instruction or from assessments such as; topic test, quick check, team written common formative assessment or the CSD Math DWSBA. Teachers need to consider student language proficiency levels, social emotional needs and IEP / 504 goals when determining skills-based groups. • Math Skill-Based Small Group Implementation Plan is recommended for establishing expectations and routines for implementing the skill-based component of the math block. It may be necessary to reteach the specific academic skills with which students are struggling. Throughout the year when new math centers are implemented, expectations and routines need to be explicitly taught. enVision 2 020 materials such as the Intervention Activity and lessons within the Math Diagnosis and Interventions System should be used for remediation. • Skill-Based Instruction is explicit and systematic to assist all students to succeed in math. Teachers need to provide the following: o additional concrete models with accompanying teacher think-alouds o opportunities for students to see relationships between visual and abstract representations o opportunities to problem solve and communicate their strategies o specific feedback o opportunities to apply skills to new contexts
Considerations for Educators
• Skills-Based instruction should be part of the daily math instructional time • Skills-based groups are created based on data collected through checks for understanding and/or formal assessments • Use the Math Skill-Based Small Group Plan found in the CSD Curriculum Map for successful implementation of math centers • Groups should be fluid and students should frequently move groupings based on data and performance • Progress Monitoring is essential to skills-based grouping. Use the
guidelines found in the map to prioritize which students to progress monitor
Suggestions for Math Centers
• Problem Solving using the Close Reading Math Protocol • Four Square Math to preview the Another Look Video • Fluency Center • Practice of previously learned material
• Pick a Project • enVision Game Center • Technology Center (Dreambox, iReady or ST Math) • Review Center
