Movement Concepts
Locomotor Skill Skills that allow movement through space or move your body from one point to another. Locomotor skills include:
Walking Hopping Sliding Jogging Galloping Skipping Running Jumping Leaping
Non-Locomotor Skill Skills that are performed without movement from one play to another. Non-locomotor skills include:
Bending Turning Balancing Pushing Twisting Rocking Stretching Pulling Swaying
Movement Concepts Applying knowledge related to the skillful performance of movement and fitness activities. Movement concepts include: 1. Body Awareness– What the body can do a. Shapes the body makes: Long, short, wide, arrow, straight, twisted, stretched, curled, symmetrical, asymmetrical. b. Balance/Weight Bearing: Various parts of the body either support the weight or receive the weight. c. Transfer of Body Weight: Moving weight from one body part to another, such as walking, rolling, leaping, etc. d. Flight: Explosive movements that involve lifting body weight from the floor. The amount of time off floor is what differentiates flight from transfer of weight. 2. Space Awareness– Where the body can move a. General or Personal Space: i. Personal Space: Area an individual child can move that is reserved for that individual only. ii. General Space: Total space used during an activity. b. Direction: The route of movement, whether forwarded, backward, sideways, upward, or downward. c. Level: The relationship of the body to the floor or an apparatus. Levels can be low, high, or in-between. d. Pathway: The path a movement makes through space. Pathways examples include straight, zig-zag, curved, circular. e. Plane: Somewhat specific pathways defined as circular and vertical/horizontal. 3. Quality of Movement– How the body can move a. Time or Speed: Children learn how to move at different speeds and to control
