Module 7: Gravitation ● Phenomenon: How can gravity keep moons orbiting planets but also cause things to fall? ● Lesson 1: Planetary Motion & Gravitation ● Lesson 2: Using the Law of Universal Gravitation ● Module Wrap Up

STANDARD

LEARNING PROGRESSIONS

● Students will explore Kepler’s Laws and Newton’s law of Universal gravitation. This will lead them to understand that kepler’s second law and newton’s law of universal gravitation can be combined to describe the orbits of planets ● Students will explore the orbits of planets and satellites and the concepts of a gravitational feld. They will also have a brief introduction to Einstein's theory of gravity.

Standard PHYS.3.1 Use mathematics and computational thinking to compare the scale and proportion of gravitational and electric felds using Newton’s Law of Gravitation and Coulomb’s Law. Emphasize the comparative strength of these two feld forces, the effect of distance between interacting objects on the magnitudes of these forces, and the use of models to understand feld forces. (PS2.B)

This will lead them to understand that the

gravitational feld explains why gravity causes both orbiting satellites and falling objects
