Student continues to refuse. Reduce the task further or offer a choice of where to begin. Student waits for teacher every time: Increase wait time and gradually fade prompts. Student becomes more upset: Reduce verbal interaction and shift to calming strategies. Student argues: Avoid debating. Repeat the prompt once, then wait. Teacher feels rushed: Remember that 10-seconds of waiting often prevents several minutes of escalation. Help, Prompt, Wait works only occasionally: Examine whether the task is too difficult, too long, or lacks sufficient motivation.
