Overview In this activity, students will discuss their initial reactions/knowledge/thoughts when presented with an image from the content area. Instructional Purpose To activate background knowledge and provide a low floor/high ceiling opportunity for all students to engage with the content Materials/Set-Up Determine AB partners by using Precision Partnering Provide AB partner thought sheet, where partners write down each others ideas to hold them accountable for talk Instructional Routine Teacher presents an image or problem and asks “What do you SEE?”. Give students at least one full minute to process on their own, then instruct students to discuss with a neighbor. Then teacher asks students, “What do you THINK?”. Give students at least one full minute to process, then instruct students to discuss with a neighbor. Teacher asks students, “What do you WONDER?”. Give students at least one full minute to process, then instruct students to discuss with a neighbor.

Ask students to share out what their partner shared with them. OPTIONAL: students fill out graphic organizer for each step

Students complete this using stems without modifying it and adding information. May need clarification of unknown words and provide short responses or mix languages.

Students complete the task using stems and provide ideas with reasons.

Students use stems to share with their partners or they can point to parts of the picture, and listen to others. May be silent or give one word response in English or home language.
