Start with the Standard Review the unpacked standards in the instructional guides. What skills (verbs) and concepts (nouns) are essential? What does mastery actually look like? Define Learning Intentions & Success Criteria Once the standard is clear, decide Learning Intentions: A daily statement of what a learner is expected to learn in a given lesson. Success Criteria: How will students show they’ve learned it? Make Learning Relevant Students engage more when the learning connects to real life. Why does this learning matter? Where might students see or use this in the real world? Teach for Thinking Clear teaching doesn’t mean more talking - it means better opportunities for students to think, talk, and make sense of learning. Build in structured classroom discussion, writing and problem-solving. Let students explain their thinking. Check for Understanding Often Don’t wait until the end of the lesson to see if students “got it.” Use quick checks during learning. Adjust instruction based on what you see. Creating rigorous learning intentions and success criteria help ensure that learners delve more deeply and extend their thinking around the standard, ideally using real world applications.
