DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Explicit Instruction for Computer Use in the Library
Say: The library online catalog is a list of every book we have in the library. It tells us information about the book including the title and author, what the book is about, if the book is available, and where to find it on the shelves. If a friend asked you what a library catalog is, how would you reply? Explain it to your neighbor. [Responses] Our library catalog is called Destiny Discover. We are going to learn how to use it today. Our library has a few computers for you to use the catalog and search for books. Destiny Discover is the only site you may visit on these computers during your library brain booster. When you use the library computers during borrow time, I expect you to quickly (think 1-2 minutes) search and then go find the item on the library shelves. If you or members of your class spend too much time on the computers or use them inappropriately, then they will no longer be available to you or your class. When I need your listening ears, I’m going to ask you to put both hands on your head so I know you are ready to listen and not distracted by your device. Let’s practice.
Explicitly teach consequences for appropriate and inappropriate computer use.
Step 2: Instruct Students to Use Destiny Discover If using individual student devices, explain any consequences for inappropriate device use today and give time for them to find Destiny Discover and assist as necessary. Show students the following, allowing them time to navigate to each.
● Path to get to destiny discover (should be in Clever) ● Banners of new and available titles (point out green “in” icon)
● Search by Topic ● Search by Author ● Search by Title ● Filter search by Format (always to Book)
Step 2: Practice Searches
Lead students through a few practice searches. ● Emily wants a book about taking care of horses. Do a search to help Emily find a book. What did you find? What kind of search was this? (Topic) ● Luis loves Amulet and wants the next book in the series. Do a search to help Luis find a book. What did you find? What kind of search was this? (Title) ● Sophia wants to read everything by Raul the Third. Do a search to help Sophia find books. What did you find? What kind of search was this? (Author) ● Amaya is at home and wants a book she can read on her laptop. Will she find something like that in Destiny Discover? (No, in a few weeks we will learn about how to access online books!) Step 3: Searching Assessment Say: Hands on your head! We are going to do one last search. I will pass out a post-it note and a pencil. Your job is to complete a search and find a book you may be interested in borrowing. Write three things on your post-it: your search words, what type of search it was, the title of the book you found. When you have finished, bring me your post-it, I will review your work, and you will be excused to look for books to borrow today. Remember to lock and close your device, leave it on your table, and tuck in your chair. The noise level should stay at a 1 or lower as you 42
