The Hummingbird and the Hole in the Sky

Long, long ago, the world was very different. The sky was covered by a thick, beautiful blanket that stretched across the entire world. This blanket kept the Earth safe, but it also kept the warmth of the sun and the light from reaching the land. The people below were cold and in the dark, and they wanted to find a way to get some warmth and light. The animals of the Earth, big and small, decided they would try to make a hole in the blanket of the sky. First, the large animals tried. The bear, with his big claws, scratched at the sky, but it didn’t make a hole. The buffalo used his strong horns to push against the blanket, but it still didn’t tear. Even the mighty eagle, with his sharp beak and wings, flew high and tried to break the sky open, but nothing worked. The sky was too thick and strong for them to break through. Then, a tiny hummingbird appeared. She was small, with bright feathers that sparkled in the sunlight. The hummingbird wasn’t as big and strong as the others, but she was determined. She flew up to the sky and began to peck at the blanket with her sharp beak. The hummingbird worked very hard. She flew higher and higher, pecking at the sky over and over. The other animals watched her, wondering if such a small creature could make a difference. But the hummingbird didn’t stop. She was focused and patient. After a long time, the hummingbird’s tiny beak made a small hole in the blanket of the sky. As the hole grew bigger, light and warmth from the sun began to shine down onto the Earth. The world became bright, and the people and animals felt the warmth they had longed for. The animals were amazed and grateful to the hummingbird. Though she was small, she had made a big difference. From that day on, the hummingbird was known as the one who brought light and warmth to the world. The hole she made in the sky stayed open, letting the sun’s light shine down forever.
