Elementary Library

WELCOME & ACTIVATE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Greet students warmly at the library door. Follow opening procedures to prepare students for learning. Draw-Pair-Share: Pass out scrap paper and pencils. Instruct students to quickly draw one of their favorite foods. They then take turns sharing their drawing with a partner and explaining why that food is their most favorite. Allow a few to share out with the whole group. OBJECTIVE Say: Most people love food–it’s a large part of culture and identity! (Define if necessary). Today we are wondering how does food connect people and trying to write about food in a way that the reader can see, smell, and taste it too!

Display and read the “I can” objective or compelling question..

Define adjectives and ask students to listen for adjectives in the story read aloud.

DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Read Aloud

Introduce selected read aloud and read with best practices. Pause throughout reading to note strong descriptive writing and adjectives with students. Prompt students to make text-to-text connections and text-to-self connections. Step 2: Adjectives Brainstorm Explain to students that we can use descriptive words called adjectives to help other readers picture and experience what we write. Using a poster or white board, make five sections labeled “see” “smell” “hear” and “taste & feel”. Brainstorm descriptive words with students for each sense that could describe food and cooking. Use strategies such as Think-Pair-Share to engage more students in the brainstorming process. K-2 Step 3: Students write poetry using My Family Food worksheet Use the vocabulary brainstorm and the My Family Food worksheet to support students writing original poetry using sensory, descriptive language. Model using the worksheet before allowing students to work independently. If time allows, students will share their work with each other. Students will illustrate their poems. You may choose to use any medium such as crayons, colored pencils, markers, or collage. 3-5 Step 3: Student Writing Project Choice Provide students with lined paper and instruct them to choose a descriptive writing project. They can write a poem using as many descriptive adjectives as possible about a food that is important to their family. Their poem should describe the food and why it matters to their family. Encourage them to use any poetic form they choose. Provide time to have a poetry share after students finish writing. Display students with the vocabulary brainstorm to support writing. Students that need more support can use the K-2 worksheet. Students could also choose to
