OBJECTIVE Say: Today we are using animal battle books to look for evidence to make our own persuasive argument about which animal would win in an epic showdown.

Display and read “I can” objective or compelling question.

DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Read Aloud & Record Evidence Say: We are going to read this animal battle book together and you will use this note taker to track evidence you can use to make your argument. Read selected animal battle book, pausing to allow students to take notes. You may need to verbally direct them or take notes as a whole group using a document camera. Do not read the last pages that reveal which animal wins. Step 2: Synthesize knowledge on Who Would Win worksheet Pass out the Who Would Win worksheet and direct students to use their evidence notes to make an evidence-based argument about which animal would win. There are two versions of the Who Would Win worksheet. For example, third grade can use the worksheet that asks for a list and 5th grade can use the worksheet that requires students to write a paragraph. Use whichever one works best for the students in front of you.

After students finish their worksheets, read the last pages of the book to reveal the author’s opinion.

Optional: Keep student work for display.
