Greet students warmly and follow opening procedures to prepare students for learning.

Say: What careers can you think of that require you to be a good reader? Why do you have to be strong reader to do that job well?

On a whiteboard or poster list student responses. Alternatively, give each table a poster and markers and have them race other groups to write as many careers as they can think of that require strong reading skills. Afterwards, have them circle all of their ideas that are STEM careers.

OBJECTIVE (1 minutes) Say: So many jobs require us to be strong readers. It’s important to practice. Scientists, engineers, and architects have to be able to read to design the buildings we use. Today we are going to be reading a fiction book about designing houses and then using our math skills to design a dream bedroom.

Display and read “I can” objective or compelling question.

DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE (29 minutes) Step 1: Read Aloud Read If I Built A House by Chris Van Dusen using best read aloud practices.:

Say: What were some of the best ideas for a house in this story?

Step 2: Show students examples of room design Show students some elaborate, over-the-top bedrooms to spark imagination. Show students what real blueprints look like. Step 3: Students Design Rooms Pass out graph paper, pencils and rulers. Challenge them to design their dream bedroom using measurement and ratios to make everything fit. Demonstrate how 1 cm can represent 1 foot (or another easy ratio). This is called a ratio, when two numbers/measurements are compared. Circulate and support students as they work.

Invite students to present their bedroom designs to the class using a document camera.
