Say: How many of you like to listen to music? With a partner share your favorite song, what it means, and why you like it. Ready go.

OBJECTIVE Say: Song lyrics are a form of poetry. They use figurative language to make meaning. Figurative language is a way of describing things without being literal. Today we are learning specifically about metaphors.

Display and read “I can” objective. I can recognize and understand metaphors in texts. Or introduce the compelling question.

Say: We are going to be listening to music and examining song lyrics today to discover metaphors and learn to define and recognize them. DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: LIsten to music & examine lyrics Let students choose from the selection of music to listen to and examine the lyrics as a whole group.

Do not listen to “Karma” by Taylor Swift as even the clean version contains inappropriate language. The lyric sheet has been updated to a cleaner version for student use later.

Ask leading questions to help students discover that metaphors are comparisons between two things to help create understanding. These comparisons do not use like or as, and the metaphor can be a few words to many lines. For example: ●​ What does “go the distance” mean? Is the singer literally traveling somewhere? ●​ Is Charlie XCX’s really throwing an apple into the sky? What could the apple be a metaphor for? ●​ What could a “ladder to the stars” be in this song? ●​ Where does this metaphor start? Where does it end? (Underline)

Listen and examine the lyrics of a few songs together.

Step 2: Define metaphor Say: After looking at these song lyrics closely, how would you define “metaphor”? Think, discuss with a partner, and then let’s come back to the whole group.
