OBJECTIVE Say: Sometimes we can use lists to make poetry! People who write poetry are called poets. Poetry is a type of writing that tries to stir a reader's imagination or emotions. The poet does this by carefully choosing and arranging language for its meaning, sound, and rhythm . Some poems rhyme and some don’t. List poems are poems made of lists! Display “I can” objective. Say: Our “I can…” for today is, “ I can write a list poem all about me ” Repeat it with me! DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Poetry Read Aloud Say: First let’s read a list poem about something delicious…ice cream! While I read, listen for repeating sounds.

Read Bleezer’s Ice Cream by Jack Prelutsky. Display the poem and read along so that students can follow as well.

Say: What did you notice about this poem? What feelings did it stir in you? [Allow student response] Poetry is a great way to express emotion. Poems can be funny, sad, serious, angry, happy, peaceful, and more.

Step 2: Book Talk Poetry Books Say:Here are a few books from our library that are poetry that I thought you might like to borrow.

Show 3-5 poetry books.

Lead students through a music and movement break.

Step 3: Student Writing Brainstorm Say: We are going to write our own list poems today. There are three steps: brainstorm ideas, write your poem in lines, revise!

Pass out student brainstorm graphic organizers.

Say: I’ve chosen our topic for the day. Our poems will be all about us! That makes these poems autobiographical. An autobiography is the story of someone’s life written by that person. In the middle of your paper, you need to write your name because you are the topic. What is our next step? Brainstorm ideas! Let’s brainstorm together: What are some details from your life that make you you? You could include some of your favorite things, or the things you don’t like! Stuff you like to do, details about your family. You should write or draw your details in the bubbles.

Other ideas may include where they go to school, friends, siblings, and family members, favorite 144
