Week 6
Direct Instruction
Remind students of the big question and look at previous knowledge. Explain that today we are going to look at animals first and their habitat second. Even though these are fictional stories, they still show traits of the animals living in this habitat. Ask students to list what traits they noticed. (fur, teeth, mammals, etc). Ask students what they noticed about the setting of the story. Is the setting a habitat? How is it the same or different from a tundra and desert? What would they call it? Read a title about forest habitats from the Animal Habitat series or Biomes of North America (or another series in the school library) Ask students how are the animals in a forest the same or different from animals in a desert or tundra. Why? Read Evergreen or Bear Came Along
Read Muncha, Muncha, Muncha or Bark, George Remind students of big question. Ask them to think about the story. What did the characters need to survive? What do all living things need? Read any Baby Animals in the Wild (Bullfrog Books) Have students answer big question using evidence from the story. Ask them to look at the other living things we researched and try to notice patterns. What do all living things (animals and plants) need to survive? Students should be given a chance to show their work to each other.
Read Stellaluna or another Baby Animals (Bullfrog Books) title
Repeat discussion of previous week. Ask specifically for students to look for new similarities and differences.
Read Born in the Wild.
Ask students to identify any similarities between the information in this book and the others we have read. Students should notice patterns (eg. Baby animals are smaller than their parents. Baby animals look like their parents. Baby animals need their parents to eat)
Students can create one last Venn diagram individually if time allows.
Students should be given a chance to show their work to each other.
Students draw a forest and living thing
