Elementary Library

Say: Today we are learning our library rules, how to follow directions in the library, and how to listen with our whole bodies. First, we need to remember how to enter the library properly. Explain how to enter the library according to your individual school procedures. Include what their feet, arms, and voices should be doing. Demonstrate what proper behavior entering the library looks like and what they should do when they get inside (for example, a seating chart). Demonstrate what improper behavior looks like. Explain positive and negative consequences for behavior.

Practice with the class entering the library. Repeat 2-3 times as needed.

Step 2: Instruct Students with Library Policies, Procedures, Expectations, & Consequences

Settle students in seats either at tables or on a rug. Teach any attention-getters you will be using this school year. Congratulate them on their behavior and following directions. Explain again any reward system for behavior in your school library. Explain and demonstrate library rules.

Step 3: Whole Body Listening & Read Aloud Say: If we all choose to follow these rules we are going to have a great year. One of my favorite things about library learning is reading books with all of you! We are going to read a few great books today about reading and learning. When we read a book I expect you to listen with your whole body, follow our library rules, and participate in the discussion. Who can demonstrate whole body listening? Say: We show we care for others during library time by using our whole body to listen. Can you each show me what whole body listening looks like? (Allow time and correct as needed) Wonderful! Let’s practice by reading a book together. Remember, if you have something to say during the story, you need to raise your hand first. Introduce and read the first book with the discussion guide. Pause reading as necessary to redirect students to whole body listening and respectful participation. Movement break Review attention-getters, procedures and routines learned that day. Review “I can” statements and ask students to share with a friend the purpose of the school library. Ask students for thumbs up or thumbs down if they think they can follow directions, listen to read-alouds with whole body listening READER’S ADVISORY, CIRCULATION PROCEDURES & DISMISSAL Before allowing students to look for books, introduce expectations and procedures for check out time. Be explicit about noise level, behavior in the library stacks, and what they should do after finding a book. Explain any timers or signals that help them manage their time. Explain positive and negative consequences for following library rules during check out time. Allow students to explain and demonstrate. If no one knows, explain and demonstrate yourself.

Dismiss for check out.
