Introduce picture book read aloud. Instruct students to think about what they are noticing and wondering as you read. (Pause throughout read aloud to solicit these from students).

Say: What connections did you make between this book and the photograph we looked at earlier? How did these two sources work together to give you a better understanding? Let’s look at another source and see if we can make any more connections. Step 2: Analyze Sources & determine if Primary or Secondary Show Primary Source #2 from set. Give students time to examine the source and share notices, wonders, and connections.
Say: All of these sources can be defined as either primary or secondary.
Show and read definitions of primary and secondary sources.
Say: Based on these definitions, is the photograph we looked at a primary or secondary source? How about the book we read? How about the ___________ we just looked at? Why is it important to use primary and secondary sources when we are looking for answers to questions?
Say: Using evidence from the sources we examined today, let’s return to our question and try to come up with an answer.
