OBJECTIVE Say: You have all changed so much since kindergarten! Living things are always growing and changing. We are going to do a research project today about the life cycle of living things. While we do our project we will learn how to identify different types of sources, or the places we get information, and practice noting or citing that source in our work. DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE (30 minutes) Step 1: Demonstrate accessing and using World Book Online & explain Graphic Organizer Say: You will be working with your partner for the bulk of today’s lesson. I hope you made a wise choice and I will make changes if we need to. Say: A lifecycle is the way a living thing, or organism, grows and changes over its lifetime – much like you changed from the time you were born until now. All organisms go through a similar pattern – they are born, grow, reproduce, and die. Your task today is to find out the specific and unique details of one organism’s life cycle by answering the question: How do organisms change over their lifetime? You can find the information you need by looking at books and World Book Online. I have already pulled our life cycle books for you and we have already learned how to get to World Book Online. Let me show you quickly how to get there again. Display and read “I can” objective. Show life cycle graphic organizer. Review Graphic Organizer with students. Show them where to write the organism they are researching, where to write search terms, the different boxes for phases of the life cycle, and how to cite their work. Choose how to assign students topics based on the books available (reward on task students with first choice, simply pass out the books, etc). Remind students of voice level and behavior expectations. Step 2: Student Pairs Research in books and World Book & Practice Citations Circulate as students work to answer questions. Support students who need assistance reading and writing. Remind students that they don’t have to read every word in an article or book to find their answers. About half way through work time, encourage students to switch to a new source. Demonstrate accessing World Book Online.

If time allows, students can present their work in small groups noting which sources they found their information.

Review “I can'' statements and ask students for thumbs up or thumbs down if they think they mastered today’s learning.
