Information Seeking & Research
PACING 6 weeks NOTE TO INSTRUCTOR
Information seeking skills, or research, is integral to academic, career, and personal success. In our information rich world, students need to be prepared to find specific information from multiple sources and analyze those results for credibility and trustworthiness. As a repository of information sources, the school library is the natural place for students to master these skills. This unit utilizes project-based learning to teach students the Research and Information strands of the USBE Library Media K-5 Core Standards. Students will become skillful information seekers through authentic questioning, problem-solving, and research. KEY STANDARD(S) 4.1: Define an information problem. 4.2: Identify the information needed. 5.1: Identify information sources (e.g., texts, places, people). 5.2: Evaluate and select sources based on predetermined criteria (e.g., relevancy, currency, credibility). 6.1: Locate identified sources. 7.1: Engage with information by reading, listening, and viewing sources in a variety of formats. 7.2: Select, extract, and record information that addresses the information problem, answers guiding questions, and meets evaluation criteria. 8.1: Organize information from multiple sources. 8.2: Present a learning product using a variety of presentation techniques (e.g., writing, speaking, media) to communicate new understandings. END OF UNIT COMPETENCY Students will be able to identify information needs, seek out and evaluate resources, and use found information to answer their questions.
