WELCOME & ACTIVATE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE (2 minutes)
Greet students and welcome them to the library.
Say: Alright detectives. There have been several crimes committed lately that need to be investigated. Untrustworthy content has been popping up in our social media feeds. We’ve apprehended several suspects already. Your job today is to examine their motives and determine which content they created and if that content is credible. Someone explain motive for me… A motive is like the author’s purpose–what was their intention in creating this source. Why did they make it? When we understand motive, we can usually determine if a source is credible, trustworthy, or not. OBJECTIVE
Display and read “I can” statement
DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Small Group Suspect & Source Analysis
Explain that students will be divided into small groups. They will each be given a source to evaluate and a description of suspects with different motives. They need to work together to examine the source and the suspect cards to figure out who created the content and why. Once they think they know who created the source, they should create a wanted poster for that suspect. Looking for triggers, issues with access, and forensic questions they will be able to determine who created the content and if it is a credible source. Explain positive and negative consequences for being on-task and using best learning behavior.
Divide students into small groups. Distribute Sources, Suspects, and Suspect Wanted Poster. Support students as necessary.
Optional Step 2: Second Suspect & Source Analysis
