Say: Today we are learning that media belongs to creators. You will know you’ve got it when you can explain ownership and list examples of media that belong to authors, illustrators, inventors, and companies. We will play this matching game again at the end and see if our answers change.

DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Read Aloud about a Creator & Discuss Say: Our first book is going to introduce us to a creator of media.

Introduce selected book and remind students of polite listening behavior and story time procedures. Use best practices while reading aloud.

Say: What kind of media did [name of creator] make in this book? Because they made the media, does it belong to them? Who owns it?

Lead students through a discussion about creation vs ownership.

Step 2: Read Aloud about a Brand & Discuss Say: Sometimes the creator owns the media - like painters owning their artwork, and sometimes companies own it, like directors don’t own the movies they make—a movie studio does. A journalist owns the words they write, but a company owns the newspaper they are printed in. Let’s read another book about companies that own a type of media called brands. Remember, brands were in our matching game!

Read selected book about a brand. Use best practices while reading aloud. It is not necessary to read the entire text.

Step 3: Creators & Media Matching Say: There are brands everywhere, even some of us are wearing them today! (Have students identify brands on their clothing). Who owns brands? Companies! Let’s try our matching game again. This time after we make a match we are going to identify if the creator owns the media or a company.

Play the matching game with the follow up question. Allow students to think before answering and discuss in partners or small groups.

I think _________ owns this media because ____________. I agree with _________ because ______________. I disagree with __________ because _____________.

Review “I can” statements and ask students for thumbs up or thumbs down if they think they mastered
