Ask: Why might we disagree on what we see? What we see and experience is our perspective. Perspective of media, like these images, is affected by our life experiences. OBJECTIVE Display and read objectives. Say: Today we are learning to recognize that different life experiences may affect our perspectives of media. “Viewpoint” is another way to say perspective. “Responses” could include what we write, say, feel, or do after interacting with different media.
DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Read Aloud Introduce the selected book.
Say: This book looks closely at perspective. We are going to listen and look carefully for different perspectives and then hypothesize, or guess, why the character might have responded the way they did.
Remind students of Whole Body Listening and other story time procedures. Read story using best practices and the resource discussion guide.
Step 2: Student Brainstorm Say: What kind of life experiences do you think might influence perspective? Let’s brainstorm a list together. Write student brainstorm responses on the whiteboard. Be prepared to ask leading questions and offer ideas to start the group share. Students may be more effective sharing other’s ideas and you can utilize Think-Pair-Share to engage every student. List may include and is not limited to: gender, family, friends, bullies, language, religion, food you are familiar with, race, how much money your family has, where you live, your school, clothes you wear. Step 3: Read Aloud & Discussion Say: So much of perspective is shaped by culture. Culture is made up of our religion, language, food, holidays, traditions, and more that we share with a group of people. Our life experiences, or culture, can make us think about media differently from others. Our last story explores perspective and media again. I want you to pay attention to how characters are different or the same and think about how they might have different ideas and perspectives.
