Read and display “I can” statements.

Say: Access refers to how we get to media –whether we are using a computer, tablet, or smartphone– and the different features of those media on those platforms. Like showing likes and shares, follower counts, ads, and infinite scroll. Digital detectives look for those things to evaluate media and recognize how they are being affected by them.

DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Read Aloud

Introduce chosen book and read using best practices and the resource guide. Facilitate discussion of how media, particularly social media, attempts to get us to share and interact with content. Note the following: ● Like & Dislike count ● Share buttons ● Ads ● Date created versus date posted Step 2: Analyze Examples Say: Let’s look at these things in action and compare a laptop experience to a smartphone experience. In turn, display the laptop article example and examine with students, then the same with the smartphone example. Ask students to point out details about access and format. On a white board or poster create a Venn diagram to record students observations about how they are different and the same. Details students may note or you should point out: ● Size of headline ● Ease of finding the author & publication date ● Notifications ● Infinite scroll

● Presence & size of advertisements ● Social media buttons/ease of sharing ● Presence and prominence of images

Say: Which format do you think makes it easier to determine credibility? (Laptops) Which device do you think people access media on the most? (Smartphones) When we use phones to get information we especially have to be digital detectives. Step 3: Finish the Comic Say: Our last learning activity today is a Finish the Comic - (Read through the comic). What could happen next? This is your ticket for book borrowing today. Please stay on task for the last few minutes, the voice level should only get to a 1.
