How did women voting affect that perception? Once Utah women had the right to vote again, many worked with national leaders to help get the 19th amendment passed and change the constitution so that women all over the country could vote! People who supported women’s suffrage and people who opposed it both used media to try and promote their ideas. Did you notice any examples of media in the video? Let’s take a look again. (Scrub through the video to find examples) Step 2: Small Group Rotation & Secondary Source Analysis Say: Around the library I’ve posted examples of media from the time period that are for or against women’s suffrage. These are primary sources. There are a few secondary sources as well to give us more information. We are going to split into small groups and your job is to figure out the message of the media and if it is informing, persuading, or entertaining.

Divide and support students working in small groups. Bring class back together.

Step 3: Whole Group Discussion Say: Let’s review a few of the examples together. You can check your work with the class and make changes to your thinking if necessary.

Review 2-3 examples as time permits. Review “I can” statements and ask students for thumbs up or thumbs down if they think they mastered today’s learning. Dismiss for circulation.

Optional Step 4: Students Design & Writing

Students will design pins supporting women’s suffrage.

Writing prompt for 4th grade: What role did Utah play in the national women’s suffrage movement? Use sources from today as evidence.
