Elementary Library

Let’s try a different way to play– I hear with my little ear, something very quiet. Can you guess what I hear? Listen closely? (may be the hvac, other classrooms, lights buzzing, students breathing, etc)

OBJECTIVE Bring to attention.

Say: There are a lot of ways we can get information about our world. Today, we are going to be focusing on seeing and hearing.

Display and read “I can” statement: I can define media and list examples.

Say: What does it mean to define? To tell what a word means, right. Our most important word today is media. You will know you’ve learned to define media when you can tell me or a partner what media means. We will also list examples of media together.

Grades 1-2

Say: Our other learning goal is to recognize what elements are used in the media to send us a message. “I can recognize elements used to construct a message.” You will learn to recognize and name five elements after viewing media today.

DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Define Media & Action Rhyme

Say: Remember our I-Spy and I-Hear game? What senses were we using? (seeing and hearing). Correct. When someone creates a message or information for another person to see or hear, that product is called media. Listen again closely as I define media: Media is how people share information with each other. Media is information we can see or hear. All media has a message. You can remember the definition by using these actions:

Media is made by people, for people. (point to self, point to others) You can see it. (point to eyes) You can hear it. (cup ears)

You can feel it. (rub hands together) You can wear it. (pluck at clothing) You can experience it. (arms up over head and down around encircling everything) All media has a message. (point at mouth) Say: Let’s look and listen around the library again. What are some examples of media you notice? List student responses on the white board. This could include books, screens (shows), clothes, and shoes. As students suggest examples, explain in detail how that item could be media.

Say: Books are definitely media! They give us so much information and are created by many different people. Let’s read a book about another type of media.
