Media Literacy

PACING 5 weeks NOTE TO INSTRUCTOR

Media Literacy refers to the skills and knowledge we use to navigate the world of information available. With so many media and technology messages surrounding them, students need to be critical thinkers, effective communicators, and involved digital citizens. Grounded in the Media Literacy strand of the USBE Library Media K-5 standards, this unit prepares students to recognize media and its messages and critical elements, interpret messages with empathy, and deeply analyze sources of information. KEY STANDARD(S) 10.1: Define basic terms and concepts of media. 10.2: Recognize that media messages are intentionally constructed. 10.3: Recognize that people experience the same message differently. 10.5: Identify and explain the rights and responsibilities with respect to media and digital citizenship. 11.1: Analyze techniques used to construct media messages. 11.2: Analyze the impact of media messages on a receiver. 12.1: Evaluate media messages for accuracy, authenticity, relevance, and source authority. 12.2: Evaluate and select media for personal and educational use. END OF UNIT COMPETENCY Students will be able to define “media” verbally or in writing. Students will be able to recognize and name various examples of media. Students will understand that all media has an intentional message, identify the message, and identify the intended audience. Students will recognize that different human experiences cause people to experience the same media messages differently, and that messages have different impacts on different receivers. Students will evaluate media messages to determine trustworthiness. Students will know how to access help and or tools for evaluating media. Students will practice digital citizenship by recognizing and citing ownership of media, as well as using and sharing media appropriately.
