DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Practice recognizing safe and unsafe online behaviors

Say: Let’s practice together. I’m going to read an example out loud. Your job is to decide if it is an example of safe or not safe online behavior with avatars. If you think it’s safe do this (show action). If you think it’s not safe do this (show action). Safe Online Behavior: ● You create a cool new avatar in your favorite video game and show friends you know. ● You try to use kind, clean language while playing as an avatar. ● You share your avatars with your grandparents so they can recognize you. ● You leave a game after an unknown avatar pops up in your game. Unsafe Online Behavior: ● You create an avatar and give it your friend’s name and information as a joke. ● You accept a friend request from a stranger because you think their avatar is cool. ● You say mean things about another person while using your avatar because no one will know it’s you. ● You create a new avatar and make it wear your elementary school mascot.

Step 2: Students design their avatars Use attention-getters to refocus the group. Show the avatar worksheet.

Say: It’s your turn to design an avatar. You can draw any type of appropriate character that represents you. In this third box is the most important task. You need to finish this sentence: I can be safe using and interacting with avatars online by__________” This is your ticket to borrow a book today. You need to have written one way to be safe using avatars online.

Reinforce table procedures, explain how you will dismiss them to check out. Send to tables and let students work on worksheets. Circulate and view student work. Assist as needed.

Say: Today we learned to be cautious about using and interacting with avatars. That’s one way we can be safe digital citizens. Silently ask and answer to yourself, do I know how to be safe with online avatars? Review “I can” statements and ask students for thumbs up or thumbs down if they think they mastered today’s learning.

Dismiss for circulation. READER’S ADVISORY, CIRCULATION PROCEDURES, & DISMISSAL
