DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Read Aloud & Discussion

Introduce and read the first story utilizing the discussion guide. You may choose to use different Little Red Riding Hood books each grade to vary the reading experience. If reading more than one book, break up the reading experience with an action rhyme or dance. For example:

(Sung to the tune of ‘London Bridge is Falling Down’) Granny, what big eyes you’ve got, Eyes you’ve got, eyes you’ve got, Granny, what big eyes you’ve got, They’re so funny.

All the better to see you with, See you with, see you with, All the better to see you with, My sweet honey.

Ears – hear Teeth – eat And end with a HOWL!

Use actions like pointing to eyes, ears, and teeth, making wolf claws, or skipping/prowling in a circle.

Use best practices while reading aloud. Use questions while reading to help students recognize who is a stranger, when Red Riding Hood shared personal information, and the consequences. Use more nuanced questioning with second graders to level up their discussion. Some questions may include: ● Red Riding Hood’s mom told her not to talk to strangers. What is a stranger? ● Is the wolf someone Red Riding Hood knows? Is he a safe person to talk to or not? How do you know? ● How did the wolf know to go to Grandma’s house to capture Red Riding Hood? Have you ever accidentally shared personal information? What happened? ● What happened because Red Riding Hood talked to someone she didn’t know? ● Who are the strangers in this story? Is the woodsman someone Red Riding Hood knows? ● How is a stranger online like the wolf in this story? Step 2: Coloring Page Show students the coloring page of Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. Read the caption out loud to students. Say: This coloring page reminds us to be smarter than Little Red Riding Hood by only talking to people we know online. Notice how they are both on a computer screen! We are going to color for ____ minutes and then it will be time to borrow books. Our tables will be clean and tidy before you can borrow books. You can take your coloring page home today and talk with your grown-ups about being safe online.
